Pregame Preview: Lady Matadors depth put to the test

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - For the second straight game and perhaps the rest of the regular season, the Arizona Western women's basketball team will be without leading scorer and rebounder Mable Doumbia. The sophomore is dealing with an injury that could have her off the court until the Region I playoffs begin on March 7th. Fortunately for Arizona Western, they are locked into the number two seed behind Eastern Arizona and will host the opening round game in The House. Until the postseason, the Lady Matadors will look for other ways to score to fill the void left by Doumbia's absence. This past Saturday, without Doumbia, it was freshman Kimora Jenkins dumping in a career high 28-points. Will it be Jenkins' again tonight or another Lady Matador rising to the occasion? The Lady Matadors enter the final road game of the season at 18-9 on a three-game winning streak, while the Roughriders come in at 2-26 and seeking to snap a 13-game skid.

About Arizona Western

The Matadors (18-9, 11-2) are surging, winning three straight and four of five with a high-pressure defense that has overwhelmed Yavapai in recent meetings. In the most recent matchup, AWC shot 54.5% from the field, racked up 26 assists, and notched 21 steals to fuel a 50-6 edge in points off turnovers. Depth continues to be a separator, as the bench outscored Yavapai's reserves 33-5 on Feb. 7. Sophomore Marta Vieira scored a career high 17 points with freshman Jessica Leina also posting a career high 16 points in the victory.

• #1 Chen Pan (G) — 11.8 PPG; primary playmaker who dished 6 assists vs. YC on Feb. 7. • #5 Kimora Jenkins (G) — 10.2 PPG; reliable double-figure scoring threat. • #3 Garance Soulas (G) — 9.7 PPG; key defensive piece with 3 steals in the last matchup. • #4 Jessica Liena (G) — 5.2 PPG; breakout 16 points on 8-for-8 shooting in the most recent win over YC.

About Yavapai

Yavapai (2-26) aims to halt a 13-game losing streak and flip the script in a series that has been one-sided. The Roughriders must solve AWC's press after committing 38 turnovers in the last meeting (and 30 in the one before it). Offensively, Yavapai shot 28.6% to AWC's 54.5% on Feb. 7 and tallied just 3 assists to the Matadors' 26. To compete, YC needs steadier ball-handling, more efficient scoring from its top options, and improved transition defense.

• #2 Kayla Bailey (PF) — Team-leading 11.2 PPG; must manage AWC's pressure after 10 turnovers in the last meeting. • #3 Giselle Serrano (SF) — 9.0 PPG; key secondary scorer to keep defenses honest. • #15 Alexys DeCremer (PG) — 7.1 PPG; tasked with initiating offense and limiting giveaways. • #11 Annika Hester (PF) — 6.2 PPG; interior presence needed on the glass and in the paint. • #1 Amani Arraf (SF) — Starter who was held scoreless last time; bounce-back production would be pivotal.
