Lady Matadors dominate Coyotes behind Doumbia's impressive double-double
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Arizona Western College women's basketball team (14-8, 7-1 ACCAC) delivered a resounding 77-43 victory over College of Southern Nevada (14-7, 3-4 ACCAC) on Wednesday night in a pivotal conference rivalry matchup. The Matadors seized control after a close opening quarter and dominated on both ends of the floor, earning their seventh conference win in commanding fashion.
Chen Pan powered Arizona Western with 20 points, 6 assists and 4 steals, orchestrating the offense and setting the tone defensively. Mable Doumbia added a dominant double-double with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 5 steals, while Garance Soulas and Kimora Jenkins each chipped in double digits as the balanced attack overwhelmed the Coyotes.
The opening quarter saw both teams trading baskets, with the Matadors holding a narrow 15-14 lead after 10 minutes. The tempo shifted dramatically in the second quarter as Arizona Western turned up the pressure, forcing turnovers and capitalizing in transition. A 17-4 run, capped by a Jenkins three-pointer, broke the game open before halftime, giving the visitors a 37-23 edge at the break.
Emerging from halftime, the Matadors wasted no time extending their advantage. Pan scored five straight points to begin the third, pushing the lead to 20 and silencing any comeback hopes from Southern Nevada. Soulas knocked down a three-pointer late in the quarter to stretch the lead to 25. Arizona Western's defense continued to smother the Coyotes, holding them to just eight points in the final period, while Carolina Cabrita's three in the closing minute established the largest lead of the night at 34.
Soulas was efficient with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Jenkins stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The Matadors dominated the interior, outscoring Southern Nevada 40-4 in the paint, and racked up 18 steals as part of a relentless defensive effort. The bench contributed 18 points, further highlighting Arizona Western's depth and unity.
