Pan's career day not enough to help boost Lady Matadors past Snow College
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Arizona Western College women's basketball team (4-6) endured a tough 65-59 loss to Snow College (8-3) on Friday afternoon, despite holding a lead for most of the contest. The Matadors, playing at Bruin Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, saw their advantage slip away in the fourth quarter as turnovers and late-game execution favored Snow.
Chen Pan paced all scorers with a collegiate career high 21 points, adding 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks while playing all 40 minutes. Pan shot 4-of-10 from three-point range and was the constant offensive spark for Arizona Western.
The Matadors set the tone early, edging ahead 18-16 after the first quarter behind timely shooting from Pan and a strong defensive effort. Arizona Western maintained its composure in the second, using a balanced attack to take a 37-33 lead into halftime. Marta Vieira controlled the boards in the first half, limiting Snow's second-chance opportunities, while Garance Soulas contributed key baskets from beyond the arc.
After halftime, Arizona Western continued to fend off Snow College runs, holding a narrow 48-47 lead heading into the final quarter. However, the game shifted midway through the fourth quarter, as Snow capitalized on Matador turnovers and hit back-to-back critical shots. Kysa Shippen's layup gave Snow its first lead since early in the game, and a timely three-pointer shortly after pushed the deficit to two possessions. Despite late efforts from Pan and Vieira, Snow closed out the game with strong free-throw shooting and clutch baskets, outscoring Arizona Western 18-11 in the final period.
Marta Vieira engineered her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, 14 of which came on the defensive glass. Garance Soulas added 12 points, hit 2 three-pointers and shared the team lead in assists with 3.
