Softball rolls to doubleheader sweep over El Paso & North Idaho
YUMA, Ariz. -- The Arizona Western College softball team (6-2) picked up a convincing doubleheader sweep Saturday at Charlie Dine Softball Field, topping El Paso Community College 8-1 before run-ruling North Idaho 10-2 in six innings in non-conference action.
Autumn Arriola shined in the circle in game one, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts and no earned runs while adding a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two runs batted in. In game two, Rauni Gallegos powered the Matador lineup with five RBIs on two hits, and Analy Trejo earned the win with five strong innings and contributed a 2-for-3 day offensively.
GAME ONE
The Matadors opened the day against El Paso Community College with a three-run first inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Léa Fréchette. Fréchette also extended her on base streak to 12 with two singles and two walks and scored three times. Arizona Western padded the lead with an RBI double by Trejo in the second. The Matadors kept the offense going late, plating a run across in the fifth and and three more in the sixth before Arriola sealed the win with a two-run single.
GAME TWO
The second game saw the Matadors erupt for seven runs in the opening inning against North Idaho. The first frame featured a double from Trejo and and RBI single by Avery Rodriguez, capped by Gallegos' bases-clearing double. North Idaho scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to trim the deficit to 7-2, but Arizona Western responded in the fifth as Gallegos drove in two more with a single to right. In the sixth, Aaliyah Soderlund delivered the walk-off RBI single to left, scoring Corinna Talbot and invoking the run rule.
Fréchette's on base streak by way of a hit or walked ended at 12, flying out to right field in the first inning against the Cardinals.
