Softball splits doubleheader with Southern Nevada to close out series

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (25-18, 11-13) split a doubleheader with College of Southern Nevada (23-18, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon at Lady Coyotes Softball Stadium in Henderson, Nev., winning game one 4-0 before losing game two 6-3.

Krisilyn Corral threw seven shutout innings and allowed just five hits while striking out a pair of batters and went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the Matadors' 4-0 win in game one.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the third inning on an Analy Trejo RBI triple and added to the lead with a run in the fifth inning on a Hannah Love run-scoring double.

Jayleen Espinoza and Destiny Martinez each drove in runs with singles in the seventh inning to cap off the Matadors' scoring in game one.

Espinoza, along with Larissa Rueda, each collected two hits, going 2-for-4 in the win.

Rauni Gallegos went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Espinoza and Trejo each went 2-for-4 with RBIs in the 6-3 loss in game two.

Southern Nevada scored the first four runs of the game, plating two runs in the first and two more in the second inning.

The Matadors got on the board thanks to an Espinoza single in the fourth inning before the Matadors pulled to within a run with a two-run sixth inning on a Trejo RBI single and a Destiny Martinez RBI ground out.

Southern Nevada tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Matadors were turned away in the top of the seventh.

The Matadors head to Coolidge, Ariz., to open a series with Central Arizona on Friday, April 25, taking on the Vaqueras in a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
