Softball swept in doubleheader by Eastern Arizona to finish off four-game series

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (13-8, 1-3) dropped both games of a doubleheader to wrap up a four-game series with Eastern Arizona (12-7, 3-1) on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, losing game one 9-6 before falling in game two 7-3.

Eastern Arizona scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun the Matadors 9-6 in game one of the doubleheader.

Larissa Rueda went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a double twice, and Rauni Gallegos also went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

The Matadors scored the first three runs of the game, scoring two runs in the second inning and another in the third before Eastern Arizona scored four runs in the fourth inning.

Rueda tied the game at 4-4 with her second double before the Gila Monsters batted 10 times in the top of the seventh to score five runs, taking the lead for good.

Hannah Love went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, while Analy Trejo doubled twice in a 7-3 loss in game two.

The Matadors fell behind 5-0 before scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to three runs but were unable to get any closer.

Eastern Arizona scored two in the top of the seventh, and the Matadors' rally fell short, scoring a run inthe  bottom of the seventh inning.

Just like in game one of the doubleheader, Rueda collected a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with a double in the loss.

The Matadors head to California on Friday, March 7, to take on Community Christian in a four-game series, beginning with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm Arizona time.
