Softball stretches winning streak to eight games with wins over Luna and Utah State Eastern

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (10-5) extended its winning streak to eight games with a 10-2 win over Luna Community College (0-13) and a 9-1 win over Utah State Eastern (4-3) on Friday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.

Jayleen Espinoza led the Matadors with three hits, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Lea Frechette went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in while Stephany Montoya went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in, in the Matadors 10-2 win over Luna in the first game of the day.

Arizona Western fell behind early as the Roughriders scored a run in the first inning before the Matadors put four runs on the board in the first inning to take the lead. After scoring a run in the second on a sacrifice fly, the Matadors used another four-run inning to push the lead out to 10-2 and end the game in the fifth inning.

Analy Trejo earned the win in the circle for the Matadors, allowing two earned runs in three innings of work.

Autumn Arriola and Hannah Love each homered as the Matadors cruised to a 9-1 win in their second game of the day, beating Utah State Eastern.

Arriola went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and Love drove in a pair as Kaity McLaughlin tripled and went 2-for-2.

The Matadors scored five of their nine runs in the first inning and jumped out to a 9-0 lead through four innings before the Golden Eagles scored their lone run in the fifth inning.

Lili Vigil German went five innings, allowing a run on six hits, and struck out two to earn the win.

The Matadors wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader with Utah State Eastern beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 15, at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
