Mapessa and Gonzalez tabbed NJCAA DI Men's Soccer All-Americans
YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer players Giulio Mapessa and Esteban Gonzalez earned NJCAA DI Men's Soccer All-American recognition after guiding the Matadors to the program's fourth consecutive NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship appearance.
Mapessa was named the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer All-American First Team after playing in 17 games during his freshman season, scoring four goals and leading the Matadors' defense to the third most shutouts in NJCAA DI Men's Soccer, holding the opposition scoreless 12 times.
The freshman from Belgium scored four goals this season, including a two-goal game in a 3-3 draw with Southern Nevada back in October.
Goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez was named an NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Second Team All-American, playing in 16 games and recording a 0.57 goals-against average, the fourth-best average in NJCAA DI Men's Soccer.
The sophomore from Belgium finished eighth in the nation with a .857 save percentage and scored a pair of goals from the penalty spot as well as converting on a penalty in the penalty shootout in a loss to Cowley County as the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship.
