Seven Matadors earn Men's Soccer All-Region recognition

YUMA, Ariz. – Seven Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer players were named All-Region DI, including six earning first-team recognition after the Matadors won their fourth consecutive Region I championship and third straight West District title.

In addition to being named Region I DI Goalkeeper of the Year, sophomore Esteban Gonzalez was named to the All-Region I DI First Team after leading the conference in save percentage at .868, making 33 saves this season, and allowing just five goals in the regular season.

The sophomore from Belgium posted a 0.48 goals-against average and led the conference in shutouts with six. Gonzalez scored a goal on a penalty in a 1-0 win over Western Texas back in September and scored the game-tying goal in a 2-1 win over Snow in the West District final.

Freshman defender Giulio Mapessa earned first-team honors thanks to a season in which he anchored a stout backline for the Matadors as the freshman defender led a Matadors' defense that allowed just nine goals this season, only giving up goals in five of the 16 games played in the regular season. Mapessa was also named the Region I DI Player of the Year.

Like his fellow backline member, Christopher Gonzalez was also named an All-Region I DI First Team honoree, playing in 17 games and making 14 starts. Martinez scored a pair of goals and recorded two assists, including a goal in the Matadors' 8-0 win over Southern Nevada in the Region I DI Semifinals.

Hiromasa Iwai is currently tied for the team lead in goals, scoring eight goals during his sophomore campaign, earning the forward first-team All-Region DI honors. Iwai scored three game-winning goals in the span of four games, doing so in a 2-0 win at Mohave and then recording game-winners in back-to-back games against Eastern Arizona on October 8 and Justice College on October 12.

Just like Iwai, Iman Ouedraogo Jr. has scored eight goals this season, doing so in 13 games and eight starts. The sophomore forward was named an All-Region I DI First Team member, recording a hattrick in a 6-4 win over College of Southern Nevada back on September 24. Ouedraogo Jr. scored a goal in the Matadors' 8-0 win over Southern Nevada in the Region I Semifinals on October 29.

Midfielder Ebenezer Laryea earned All-Region I DI First Team recognition, playing in 17 games and making 12 starts while scoring two goals and recording four assists for the Matadors. Laryea scored the game-winning goal in the Matadors' 8-0 win over Southern Nevada in the Region I Semifinals on October 29.

Sophomore Stephen Saladin was named to the All-Region I DI Second Team after playing in 15 games, making 12 starts and scoring a pair of goals. The forward from St. Louis, Mo., scored a goal in a win over Community Christian and Imperial Valley and started four of the last five games prior to the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship.
