Matadors power past CSN with double-doubles from Mason & Winitana
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Arizona Western College men's basketball (18-6, 8-1 ACCAC) delivered a dominant performance away from home, storming past College of Southern Nevada 93-73 in a key conference matchup Wednesday night. The Matadors controlled the contest from the opening tip, building a double-digit lead early and showcasing their strength, depth and execution on both ends of the court.
Arizona Western set the tone right away with an 11-2 opening run, forcing Southern Nevada to play catch-up the rest of the night. The Matadors extended their advantage to as many as 18 in the first half following a three-pointer from Mario Brunetto, and carried a 46-36 lead into the break. The second half saw Arizona Western dial up the pressure, pushing the margin to 25 points after a pair of free throws by Matt Anglo with just under seven minutes left. The Coyotes never threatened a comeback as the Matadors' defense held firm and offense continued to fire on all cylinders.
Fresh off his NJCAA & ACCAC player of the week honors, Marsai Mason delived another double-double, anchoring the Matador attack with 19 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks, shooting 7-of-11 from the field in a complete two-way effort. Paora Winitana was just as impactful, posting 17 points, a game-high 15 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Matt Anglo set the table offensively with 18 points, a game-best seven assists and two steals, while Illiam Fevry added 13 points, seven boards, two assists and a block. Engel Gutierrez sparked the bench with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
The Matadors' collective effort was on display, as they outrebounded Southern Nevada 44-37, led by two players with double-digit boards. Offensively, Arizona Western shot an impressive 52.5 percent from the field and tallied 21 assists on 32 field goals, highlighting unselfish play and crisp ball movement. Defensively, the Matadors locked down the perimeter, limiting the Coyotes to just 29 percent shooting from three-point range while applying relentless pressure throughout. With this win, Arizona Western improves to 18-6 overall and 8-1 in the ACCAC, further cementing its position as a conference front-runner.
