Soulas' double-double helps pace Lady Matadors past Roughriders
PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors women's basketball team (19-9, ) delivered a dominant performance on the road, surging past Yavapai College 77-51 on Wednesday night for their fourth consecutive win. Arizona Western took control early and never looked back, using suffocating defense and a balanced attack to set the tone in a key conference matchup.-
Chen Pan led the way for the Matadors with an all-around display, scoring 18 points on 58 percent shooting, knocking down four three-pointers, grabbing six rebounds, and swiping six steals to go along with four assists. Her relentless energy set the pace on both ends of the floor.
Arizona Western started with aggressive defense and quick ball movement, holding a 17-13 lead after the opening quarter. The Matadors ramped up the intensity in the second, outscoring Yavapai 23-7 to open up a commanding 40-20 halftime advantage. The defense forced 30 turnovers in the opening half alone, while Garance Soulas and Kimora Jenkins each found their rhythm offensively.
The Matadors kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter, pouring in another 23 points and stretching the lead to 32. Aline Mastelic brought instant offense off the bench, while Eryn Brandon-Pollard and Jenkins added timely buckets to keep the momentum out of reach for Yavapai. Even as the home team scored 20 in the fourth, Arizona Western's depth and teamwork closed out the win in emphatic style.
Garance Soulas posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. Kimora Jenkins added 11 points and three triples, while Aline Mastelic went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for 8 points and three assists. Eryn Brandon-Pollard contributed 9 points off the bench and the Matadors dished out 15 assists as a team. Arizona Western outrebounded Yavapai 36-20, gathering 14 offensive boards to fuel second-chance points.
