WSOC: PK Sends Mats to Region I Final

DOUGLAS, Ariz---The Region I Playoffs have already seen a full season’s worth of dramatic moments through two matches for the Arizona Western Lady Matadors highlighted by a 1-0 win over top-seed Cochise Thursday in Douglas.

Linda Obare’s penalty kick in the 61st minute gave Arizona Western it’s first goal over Cochise this season, the team’s played to a scoreless draw two weeks ago in Yuma.

Obare beat the Region I Keeper of the Year, Brianna Guzman for the goal.

Both teams were shorthanded as Cochise was without Region I Player of the Year Maria Azarias and the Matadors were without Elizabeth Ephraim, who had to serve a suspension for a red card from Tuesday’s win.

Meanwhile, Matador Keeper Melanie Yanez kept a clean sheet with five saves.

Obare’s kick, setup by a handball in the box, proved to be the only offense in 200 minutes played between the two teams this season.

Arizona Western advances to Saturday’s Region I Championship for the second consecutive year.

The Region I Championship will be a rematch on many levels as the Matadors travel to Phoenix to take on the 3rd Seed Paradise Valley Pumas. The Matadors and Pumas played twice this season, a non-conference match in Yuma and a conference match in Phoenix. Both matches ended in draws setting up a third round to determind a region champion.

The Region I Championship will take place at Paradise Valley Community College at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 2nd.
