YUMA, Ariz---After scoring just one goal in their first three contests, the Arizona Western College Lady Matadors (1-2-1) earned their first win of 2019 by erupting offensively to the tune of twelve goals in a shutout victory over visiting South Mountain (0-3) Thursday evening at The Matador Soccer Field.
It took just two minutes for the Matadors to find the net, when Elizabeth Ephraim ripped a shot from outside of the box, just overhead of the Cougar's keeper. The Matadors never let up from there. Raheal Aka-Ety scored twice in the first half and was a constant threat every time she touched the ball.
Local freshman Karen Rivas, from Kofa High School in Yuma, broke out midway through the first, ripping a deep strike for her first collegiate goal. Rivas was just getting started as she added another goal in the 39th minute on an assist from Tyra McKenzie. Rivas would not be stopped from there adding a third goal in the 56th minute and the final strike for the Matadors in the 88th minute, weaving through multiple defenders before finishing in the back of the net.. It was a banner day for Rivas, who scored four goals and was a dynamic finisher and creator for the Lady Matadors.
Ephraim would add a second goal as well as an assist. McKenzie found the net for the second straight game in addition to her assist of Rivas. Sophomore Vera Asare also scored twice with an assist. Freshman Rosemary Harrison scored the final goal of the first half for AWC, just 30 seconds before the break.
The offense was not the only great part of the day as essentially every Matador midfielder, led by Elani Neri, and defenders like Linda Obare and LeiLei Renaud protected keeper Melanie Yanez as the Matadors limited South Mountain to just 2 total shots.
Its the most goals AWC has scored in exactly two years, and the most under second year Head Coach Nicole Acosta, despite the record breaking season the Mats had in 2018.
Its the first win of 2019 for the Matadors, wrapping up a quick two game homestand. AWC will hit the road on Saturday to play the GateWay Geckos in Phoenix beginning at 4:30pm.
