YUMA, Ariz---A physical battle ended in a 0-0 draw as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (9-3-3 overall, 5-1-2 ACCAC) hosted the Cochise Apaches (7-4-2 overall, 6-0-2 ACCAC) Thursday at the Matador Soccer Field.
The Matadors had few chances against Cochise keeper Brianna Guzman who collected six saves.
Melanie Yanez was tested in the AWC goal five times including a diving, reach back save early in the second half to preserve the shutout.
The hard-fought contest saw over 15 total fouls whistled in the first half and a total of 25 between both teams.
While the Mats best chances came off of counter attacks, the Cochise defense held tight to keep AWC off of the scoreboard.
The draw continues to muddle up a tight race for conference positioning. While Cochise remains unbeaten in conference play atop the standings, four teams, including the Matadors are separated by less than a game.
The Mats head to Scottsdale on Saturday to play the Artichokes at 4:30pm before wrapping up the regular season against the Pima Aztecs Wednesday night in Tucson.
