WSOC: Lady Matadors Strike Twice Against Bears

YUMA, Ariz--- The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors (8-2-2 overall, 4-0-1 ACCAC) extended their unbeaten streak to double-digits against Phoenix College (6-3-3 overall, 3-3 ACCAC) with a 2-0 victory Saturday afternoon.

Tyra McKenzie played a crucial role in the Mats offense, assisting on both Matador goals, while setting up long set pieces and throw-ins to stretch the field

But it was a defensive struggle until the corner-kick that the Matadors earned in the 23rd minute when McKenzie lobbed the ball into box that Eliani Neri pushed into the back of the net for a goal and the lead 1-0. It was Neri's first collegiate goal coming right before the water break.

The Matadors thought they scored again on a corner, but the goal was disallowed for curving out of bounds in flight, negating a second goal.

AWC found that insurance goal in the 87th minute as Vera Asare played the ball in the space, set up by Mckenzie's throw, tapping the ball past the keeper to seal the 2-0 win.

The Lady Matadors' unbeaten streak extends to ten as they remain one of three unbeaten teams in ACCAC play.

Arizona Western is home Thursday, October 10th against Chandler Gilbert College on the Matador Soccer Field. AWC and Chandler-Gilbert will kick the match off at 4:30pm. The Men’s will follow at 7:00 pm.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
