PHOENIX, Ariz---Sophomore Elizabeth Ephraim’s golden goal three minutes into overtime lifted the Arizona Western Lady Matador’s (4-2-1) over the host Phoenix College Bears (3-1-2) in a non-conference matchup at Hoy Stadium Saturday evening.
The fourth consecutive win for the Matadors has coincided with every match that they’ve scored multiple goals in this season as well as they return to the state of Arizona.
The Mats scorching offense picked up where it left off, after six second-half goals Thursday, when Vera Asare knifed through the Bears defense and scored from the top of the penalty box in the 4th minute.
The 1-0 lead would hold up for most of the match as the Matador defense was stout. AWC allowed just two shots from Phoenix the entire match while winding up for 16 total shots on offense, four on goal.
But one of Phoenix’s two shots found the net as Daizy Meza found the net on an assist from Lydiana Tavizon, breaking through in the 87th minute.
While the Bears were able to force overtime, Ephraim quickly ended the match after Asare won the ball and set up her fellow sophomore for the game winner.
The Mats will have a week to prepare for their next match as they will open up ACCAC play on Saturday, September 21st against Paradise Valley (game to be played at Reach 11) at Noon.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
