Up To Two
YUMA, Ariz. – Another unbeaten week, another climb in the polls for the Arizona Western College women’s soccer team. The Lady Mats (13-0-0) are now second in the NJCAA Poll and are the only team that is unbeaten and untied in the top five. Navarro (9-0-1) is first. Tyler (10-1-1) dropped from first to third after losing to Navarro. Monroe College (7-0-1) and Eastern Florida State (7-1-1) round out the top five.
Last week, Arizona Western picked up two more wins and tied a team record with the longest unbeaten streak (no losses or ties) at 13 matches. Last season, AWC went 10-0-3 in the middle of the season over a 13-match stretch. The 13 wins in a row this year shattered the previous record of eight straight wins.
First, the Lady Mats took out GateWay 5-1 behind a hat trick from Cato Hom. On Saturday, Christiana Boateng scored twice to push Arizona Western past Chandler-Gilbert 2-1. Boateng leads the ACCAC (and is tied for ninth nationally) with 20 goals. She has scored 40% of Arizona Western’s goals this season.
AWC is one of three ranked teams from the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. Phoenix (10-1-1) moved up one spot to seventh, and Paradise Valley (10-2-1) stayed in 19th.
AWC was originally scheduled to play at Paradise Valley this afternoon, but the match was postponed to October 20 due to weather. Now, the team will travel to South Mountain for an afternoon match at 3:30. The Lady Mats are back home for a big matchup with Phoenix on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. following the men’s contest at 4:30.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
