Scottsdale Stuns #19 AWC in OT
|Scottsdale Community College||2|
|Arizona Western College||1|
YUMA, Ariz---Despite a halftime lead, the #19 Arizona Western Matadors (5-1-0 overall) ceded a late goal, before falling 2-1 to the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (5-0-0 overall) on a golden goal in a non-conference showcase of two previously unbeaten ACCAC schools.
While Scottsdale controlled possession in the early going, the Matadors came away with the best early chances, sailing a pair of shots over the cross bar.
The Matadors broke through in the 41st minute when D Sanchez rang a shot off of the Scottsdale keeper, with the ricochet landing in front of Tessa Smith, who tapped home the goal for the 1-0 lead into the half.
Scottsdale managed to maintain possession much of the 2nd half as AWC managed with a flurry of injuries. Scottsdale finally broke through in the 79th minute when the Mats failed to clear a ball out of the box, instead landing at the feet of Nicole Gianiorio who tied the game with a blast from the top of the '18.
That would eventually force overtime where Scottsdale got the best chance on another shot from the top of the box that appeared to be headed in before AWC keeper Tia Kelk made a fantastic save to dump the ball over the crossbar.
But Kelk landed awkwardly and had to come out.
Scottsdale came back two minutes later with a cross to end it and hand AWC its first loss of the season.
AWC's previously scheduled conference opener at South Mountain on Saturday was canceled at the beginning of the season when the Cougars announced they would not field Men's or Women's Soccer in 2021.
The Matadors will have to wait to get back on the pitch until Tuesday against GateWay when they open up the 9 match ACCAC slate. They will host the Geckos at 4:30pm on the Matador Soccer Field.
