Matadors Strike Often for First Conference Win

YUMA, Ariz---Down a goal early and tied at halftime, the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (2-3 overall, 1-2 ACCAC) struck three time in the second half to knock of the Glendale Gauchos (0-4 overall, 0-4 ACCAC) 5-2 Saturday evening at the Matador Soccer Field.
Pau Fierro cashed in a penalty kick in the 31st minute to tie the match at 1-1. The PK was setup by Stacey Papadopoulos, who was constantly behind the Glendale defense and fouled in the box on what was her best opportunity of the first 30 minutes.
The Matadors took the lead quickly after that, as four minutes later a punt from the Glendale keeper fluttered a quarter of the way down the field. Brenda Garcia delivered a beautiful first touch forward to win the posession and get Papadopoulos behind the Glendale defense. The Australian struck from the top of the '18, a curled the shot into the top right portion of the net to give AWC a 2-1 lead.
Glendale struck just four minutes after that, as Kacie Merse spun at the top of the box and dropped in a goal just under the crossbar, tying the match at 2 during halftime.
But Arizona Western ironed it out in the second half as Papadopoulos led the attack six minutes into the period, delivering a low cross in front of the net to be tapped home by Lauryn Scott to regain the lead.
Papadopoulos also cashed in on one of the Matador's seven corners, lofting a ball right in front of the goal for LeiLei Renaud to head home for an insurance goal in the 77th minute.
The capping goal was Scott's blast from nearly 30 yards out to seal the 5-2 victory.
Arizona Western nabs their first home win and first conference win of 2021 and will now focus on Thursday's tilt in Douglas against the Cochise Apaches.
