YUMA, Ariz---After a daunting start to the season with three games in three days, the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (0-2-1) staged a late comeback with a game-tying goal in the 81st minute of their home opener.
While eventually forcing a draw, the Lady Matadors look to carry the momentum they built as they host the South Mountain Cougars (0-2) in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon on the Matador Soccer Field.
Freshman Tyra McKenzie’s goal was the first of the season for the Matadors and the defense held their opponents scoreless for the final 65 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods in order to battle to a draw. The home opener was also a reprieve after two road games in Nevada the prior two days.
Their opponents on Thursday from South Mountain have yet to score a goal in two matches under first year Head Coach Chris Marrone. The Cougars will look to test their young squad against a Matador team that has increased its defensive effort in each of its first three games.
Tickets are just $5 for the game, students enter free with I.D. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm, or approximately 20 minutes following the conclusion of the women’s game. Both games will be streamed via Facebook Live @AWCMatadorAthletics.
