YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western women’s soccer team battled, created chances and attacked all night against Pima, but the shots simply didn’t go home. In the end, Pima knocked in one breakaway goal and absorbed the AWC (13-4-3 overall, 13-4-3 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) attack to knock off the Lady Mats 1-0.
Pima (15-4-1 overall, 15-4-1 ACCAC) only cracked the Lady Matador defense once in the 32nd minute. Emily Gallagher slipped a ball through and Jahmonique Smith finished it off from 15 yards out to take a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half, AWC’s Karen Melendrez nearly tied things up with a big shot from 25 yards. Her shot smacked the center of the crossbar, and Pima managed to clear the rebound before AWC could track it down.
AWC’s Karla Navarro smoked a shot on frame in the 75th minute, but Pima’s Tara Kase just managed to bat it aside.
The Lady Mats outshot Pima 14-4. Both teams finished with three shots on goal.
AWC finishes third in the conference and will host a playoff match on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The team will play Scottsdale.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
