YUMA, Ariz. – Karen Melendrez piled up points last week for the No. 18 Arizona Western women’s soccer team. The Lady Mats went a perfect 3-0, and Melendrez’s three goals and three assists played a huge role in that stretch. She was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week earlier today.
The freshman came through in the clutch during the team’s first match of the week against Cochise. With 48 seconds to play, Melendrez tied the match at two by banging home a goal. She also had an assist in the 3-2 win.
“Karen has been a standout player since day one,” said AWC head coach Alexia Poon. “Against Cochise, I had to make a change in formation that we hadn’t used Karen in this season. I explained what I wanted her to do both in support and on the attack, and she owned her role. I am so proud of her and proud of the player she is growing into. She is always looking for what is in the best interest of the team and her teammates.”
When the team traveled to Pima on Thursday, she had an assist to help the team put Pima away in a 3-1 win. Melendrez scored twice and added an assist in an 8-1 win against Glendale to close out the week.
On the year, Melendrez is tied for third in the nation with 10 assists, and she as tallied 12 goals as well. The Lady Mats are 7-1-3 overall and in conference play. Melendrez is the second player to be named the ACCAC Player of the Week for the Lady Mats. Cinthya Samaniego was named the Player of the Week on September 11.
The team travels to Chandler-Gilbert Community College tomorrow for an afternoon match at 4:30 p.m.
