YUMA, Ariz. – Already off to the best start in team history, the Arizona Western College women’s soccer team vaulted to fourth in the latest NJCAA poll. This is the highest ranking for the Lady Mats (7-0 overall, 7-0 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) in team history. The top three are Eastern Florida State (stayed first), Tyler (stayed second) and Navarro (moved up from fifth).
The Lady Mats went 3-0 last week. On Tuesday, AWC blanked South Mountain 3-0 behind two goals from Christiana Boateng. The Lady Mats traveled to Phoenix College and eked out a 2-1 win over then third-ranked Phoenix (now seventh). That loss was Phoenix’s first regular season loss since the 2016 regular season. Saturday, AWC shut out Glendale 4-0 to win its seventh straight.
AWC’s seven-match winning streak ties the longest winning streak in team history. In the team’s first season in 2013, the Lady Mats won seven straight in the middle of the year. The longest unbeaten streak (which includes ties) is 13 straight, done last season. The team went 10-0-3 during that stretch.
The Lady Mats are one of three ranked teams from the ACCAC. Phoenix dropped to seventh. Paradise Valley dropped from 15th to 20th.
Arizona Western is ranked sixth in the USCAA (United Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll.
AWC is headed to Scottsdale today for its only match this week at 7:00 p.m. tonight.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
