YUMA, Ariz---An uncomfortable start and finish, was made easier by a solid offensive performance as the #20 Arizona Western Lady Matadors (6-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 ACCAC) started conference play by holding on to a 4-3 win over the GateWay Geckos (1-7-0 overall, 0-2 ACCAC) Tuesday afternoon on the Matador Soccer Field.

GateWay scored on their first attack of the afternoon and immediately put the Matadors on their heels.

But a corner kick, four minutes later setup the Matadors to get right back into the mix. Diana Sanchez played an exchange with Izzy Payne on the outside before crossing into Lirios Alacorn, who trapped the pass, and ripped it past the keeper to level the match.

The Mats took the lead 16 minutes later, when Jaeda Centeno broke free and ripped a shot from the top of the box into the bottom corner of the net.

The Mats took a 2-1 lead into the half and then added a goal two minutes into the second half when Andrea Dominguez lobbed a pass to Tessa Smith at the top of the '18, before Smith controlled possession and stepped away from two defenders before blasting the shot across the keeper to make it 3-1.

Payne assisted on the final goal for the Matadors in the 61st minute, lobbing a similar ball for Centeno who found the other corner of the net to add the insurance goal, making it 4-1.

But GateWay found late life when an odd hand ball was called at the top of the box against AWC, awarding the Geckos a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Jayden Poulin cashed in the chance and GateWay had cut the lead to 4-2.

Just two minutes later Leigha Ritchie dribbled around the Matador defense on the left side of the box before a low cross found the feet of Brenda Costa who tapped it in.

The Matadors would hold off the Geckos in the final five minutes to pick up their first conference win of the year in their first conference match of the year.

AWC will hit the road to take on Glendale on Saturday.
