WBB: Upset Bid Falls Short vs. Midland (TX)

YUMA, Ariz---A double digit lead in the first half faded away as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (4-4 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) upset bid over the #13 Midland (TX) Chaparrals (9-2 overall) fell short in a 58-32 loss Friday evening at The House.

The Mat's opener for the Thanksgiving Classic started off plentiful with AWC dropping eight three-pointers to build a twelve point lead to start the second half.

But the Chaps, with wins over three ranked teams already on their own resume, flexed their prowess inside with 22 rebounds on the offensive glass to help overcome a 23% shooting performance from the field in the first half. Harria Mendoza and Hanah Sims combined for seven of the Matadors twelve three's.

While Midland was just 18% from three, they hit five of their six treys in the second half and spurred a 16-3 run to overcome AWC.

Mendoza finished with a game-high 16 for the Mats while Sims had 12. Ariana Pagan had nine points, 6 boards and frustrated the Midland posts all game.

Arizona Western concludes the 2019 Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm MST against the Anoka Ramsey (MN) Golden Rams at The House.

Tickets are just $5, students get in free with I.D.

The game will be livestreamed on the Matador Athletics Facebook Page (@AWCMatadorAthletics).
