WBB: Turnovers Plague AWC in loss to EAC
YUMA, Ariz---Finding an edge against a tough, physical Eastern Arizona Gila Monster (4-0 Overall, 4-0 ACCAC) proved too tall a task Friday night for the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (1-5 overall, 1-2 ACCAC) in a 68-50 at The House.
The Matadors never found their range from deep, shooting just 1-13 from the arc on the night, while Eastern establish a physical interior presence from the beginning.
The Matadors also saw EAC turn 8 turnovers into 12 points to build a first half lead.
Catarina Ferriera got to the line and cleaned up the boards, ultimately finishing with 12 points and 7 rebounds.
That was long enough for Eastern to find their rhythm on the outside as Isis Smith had three 3’s, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, finishing with 16 points, a game high.
Mary Workman added a couple of three’s for Eastern.
The Matadors were led by several acrobatic shots from Buse Utku, who finished with 11 points. Mizha Gilberto had 9 points and 8 boards while Jenny Nkem-Womsi contributed 8 points and 7 rebounds.
The Gila Monsters outrebounded AWC 47-30. But it was in combination with a high number of turnovers that did Arizona Western in, as they finished with 25 turnovers on the night.
Both teams will return to action at 2:00pm against each other at The House in Yuma. The game will be broadcast by AWC TV (Spectrum Channel 74 in Yuma) and streamed on awcmatadors.com.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
