WBB: Mistakes Pile Up in Loss to #16 CAC
YUMA, Ariz--The Arizona Western Lady Matadors (2-6 overall, 2-3 ACCAC) held a lead as late as the midway point in the fourth quarter, but turnovers and missed free-throws piled up as the #16 Central Arizona Vaqueras (1-1 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) pulled away from them 60-50 Tuesday night at The House.
The Matadors early start was spurred by a couple of early three's by Faith Silva, staking the Mats to a 16-11 lead in the first quarter.
But the offense stalled in the second, and only Buse Utku's 3 in the final seconds of the half connected as Central outscored AWC 14-5 in the period.
Central's Denali Hughes and Shalyse Smith powered the Vaquera's offense in the first half and began wearing the Matadors down on the interior.
The pair ultimately combined for 35 points and 11 rebounds while going 12-18 at the line.
Utku still generated offense for the Matadors in the second half and Lakeycia Babels turned a few steals into six points as the Matadors grabbed a second half lead.
But turnovers and free-throws, both those for Central and those missed by AWC, piled up and Central pulled away over the final four minutes.
Arizona Western is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Douglas to take on Cochise at 2:00pm.
