YUMA, Ariz---The Arizona Western Lady Matadors (5-4 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) raced out to an early lead en route to a 74-62 win over the Anoka Ramsey (MN) Golden Rams (4-4 overall) to close out the Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon at The House.
The Matadors jumped all over Anoka-Ramsey from the first possession of the game as Kyndal Ricks stole the first pass of the game leading to a transition layup before connecting on a three off of another steal to make it 5-0 AWC just 20 seconds in.
The Mats reserves would join the party quickly as freshman Faith Silva hit five of her ten three's to lead the Mats with 21 points off of the bench. The bench scored 38 of the Matadors 74, but starters Harria Mendoza and Ricks contributed 13 and 10 respectively to help Arizona Western off to the quick start.
The Matadors recieved at least two points from ten of the twelve players who touched the floor.
Arizona Western also held the edge on the glass thanks in large part to Arianna Pagan who snagged 11 boards.
Anoka-Ramsey made it interesting late, pulling within eight point thanks to a 15-2 run in the fouth quarter. CJ Nickens was a handful with 19 points and 14 boards for the Golden Rams.
With the win, Arizona Western gets back above .500 while closing out the Thanksgiving Classic with a win. Laramie County was the lone 2-0 team in the tournament after knocking off #13 Midland (TX) 66-62 earlier in the afternoon and beating Anoka-Ramsey 67-54 Friday night.
The Matadors will be back in action Wednesday night when they host the Cochise Apaches at 5:30pm. The Men will follow at approximately 7:30pm, both games will be broadcasted on AWC TV and livestreamed via the Matador Sports Network.
