YUMA, Ariz--- The Arizona Western College Lady Mats (4-3, overall 1-1 ACCAC) found great success in the paint in route to an 88-63 win over the Tohono O’odham Lady Jegos (4-4 overall 0-2 ACCAC) for their first conference win Saturday afternoon at the house.
The Lady Mats entered the contest with the need to reduce their turnovers and keep a fast pace tempo in order to win. The Mats only committed one turnover in the first five minutes but fell behind 19-16 at the end of the first quarter as the turnovers mounted.
AWC found rhythm inside the paint as Liana Gobejisshvili made a pair of buckets to give Matadors a 26-23 lead. Gobejisshvili, later on, made another basket to push the lead back to 33-30. Gobejisshvili had seven points in the second quarter as Arizona Western ended the first half ahead 38-32.
The Matadors extended their lead by nine in an early offensive run to start the second half. The Lady Mats once again went inside and produced a big run, this time behind Arianna Pagan. Pagan sparked the offense with eight points to end the quarter with giving the Mats their largest margin at 67-47.
While the two posts played a significant role in getting the offense started, Harria Mendoza went off in the second half to finish with a career high 25 points.
Along with Faith Silva; Mendoza, Pagan, and Gobejisshvili tallied a total of 66 of the 88 Matador points.
The Lady Mats wrapped up the 88-63 victory for their first win of the conference season and getting back above .500 for the year.
Three Matadors registered double-doubles as Mendoza, Pagan and Arlyssa Underwood each grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with double-figures in points.
The Mats built the lead on the inside thanks to 30 total offensive rebounds and sealed the game by shooting 52% from the field. While they hit on just 6 of 36 threes, the plus 29 rebounding was certainly a a strong point.
