SCOTTSDALE, Ariz---Overcoming a slow start with a strong finish may as well be a microcosm for the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (11-8 overall, 6-5 ACCAC) at the midway point as they dispatched the Scottsdale Artichokes (4-14 overall, 2-9 ACCAC) 59-47 Saturday evening at Scottsdale Community College.
While the Lady Matadors appeared to have some leftover offensive woes from Wednesday night, they displayed a number of exceptional adjustments in the third quarter to dismiss Scottsdale.
Buse Utku scored seven of her twelve points in the third quarter while Hanah Sims and Harria Mendoza each added seven second-half points.
Sims helped seal the game at the free-throw line down the stretch hitting all four of her attempts in addition to her three that jump started the Mat's 21 point third quarter.
Arianna Pagan finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Arizona Western in the edge on the glass.
The Mats scored ten points in each of the first two quarters but buckled down in the second quarter defensively to tie the game at 20 heading into the half.
The Lady Matadors played inspired in the second half en route to closing the game and getting to the midway point in conference play above .500.
They continue a tough test against Central Arizona, who remains unbeaten atop the ACCAC standings, Wednesday night at 5:30pm in Coolidge, AZ.
