DOUGLAS, Ariz. – A low offensive output against the ACCAC leader made for a bad combination in the Lady Matador’s 77-38 loss to Cochise Saturday night.
The Matadors had their work cut out for them against the conference leader in points allowed, but Arizona Western struggled to find offense early and fell behind by double-digits at the end of the first quarter.
Yemiyah Morris and LaPraisjah Johnson started fast for the Apaches and stifling defense led by Awa Keita triggered a 16-3 second quarter for the Apaches.
The Lady Matadors were only able to muster six points in the third before finally breaking free in the fourth. The Mats doubled their output from the first the quarters behind Vinyet Garcia who connected on a runner to get started. Garcia followed it up by connecting on 3 of 4 three-pointers and finished tied with a team-high 11 points.
Mone Izumi had six of the Mats 10 in the first and finished with 11 herself.
Arizona Western falls to 8-15 and 6-9 in ACCAC play. Both Matador Basketball teams complete the roadtrip in Mesa on Wednesday beginning with the Women at 5:30pm.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
