YUMA, Ariz. – Tenacious rebounding and a big third quarter propelled the Lady Matadors to a 70-59 win over the Tohono O’odham Lady Jegos Saturday evening.
Harria Mendoza snagged 15 total rebounds, five offensively, and added 12 points while Mone Izumi led Arizona Western (8-13, 6-7 ACCAC) with 20 points. Izumi connected on four of eight three point attempts.
The Mats used their size throughout the game to maintain possession, outrebounding the Jegos by 13 for the game.
Tohono O’odham (10-11, 6-7 ACCAC) hung close throughout the first half thanks to monster nights from Cherlee Collins and Rhiannon Singer who each finished with 19 points. But foul trouble early in the third for both Singer and Collins gave the Mats the upper hand and Western outscored Tohono O’odham by 12 in the third quarter.
The Mats leading scorer on the season, Mar Ibern, was held to just 5 points but contributed five assists and five rebounds while drawing constant attention.
The Matadors begin a daunting three game road-trip on Wednesday at Pima. The game will be broadcasted on AM 560 KBLU beginning with the pre-game show at 5:20pm.
