YUMA, Ariz. – The Lady Matadors patent stifling defense in the first quarter paired with a consistent, hot-shooting offense parlayed into an 80-48 route of the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes Saturday at The House.
Harria Mendoza sparked the offense connecting on her first four three-pointers in the first half and Mar Ibern powered a big third quarter as the Lady Mats scored their largest victory of the season.
Mone Izumi facilitated the offense with a dazzling display of no-look passes and racked up 9 assists on the night.
The Mats shot 55.8% from the field and hit on 11 three-pointers to back their typical stout defensive effort.
The Matadors forced 22 turnovers and converted those into 21 points. They stuffed the Coyotes offense under 28% from the field and just three of 14 from three.
The win keeps the Matadors focused on catching the final spot in the Region I playoffs as they improve to 10-15 and 8-9 in ACCAC play.
The Coyotes, who had won 5 of 7 entering the night, fall to 15-10, 9-8 in ACCAC play.
The Matadors are back at home Wednesday night when they go for the season sweep of South Mountain at 5:30pm.
