RICHFIELD, Utah---An early lead slipped away in the second quarter as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (0-1) dropped the season opener on the road 60-48 to the host Snow College Badgers (1-0) Friday evening.
Despite building a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, the Matadors saw the Badgers catch fire to close the first quarter on a 6-0 run and take a commanding lead into the second half. The Badgers hit nine of fifteen shots in the second quarter while holding the Matadors to just two field goals in the quarter to put Snow on top 36-21 at the break.
Arizona Western pulled within five points in the fourth quarter before going without a field goal over the last three and a half minutes.
Faith Silva led the way for the Lady Matadors with 15 points while hitting on 40% of her three-point attempts.
The Mats surrendered 27 points off turnovers, including the important second quarter run by Snow.
The Matadors wrap up the road trip to Utah Saturday afternoon against Utah State University Eastern at Noon.
