YUMA, Ariz---Seven early three's helped the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (7-7 overall, 2-4 ACCAC) earn a huge home win 75-47 over the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes (7-4 overall, 4-2 ACCAC) to close out the semester Wednesday night at The House.
Faith Silva sparked a three-point clinic for the Lady Matadors with five different players connecting on trey's as Arizona Western jumped out to a 26-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Hanah Sims joined in as the only other Matador to hit multiple three's, knocking down half of her six shots from the outside.
Meanwhile, Ariana Pagan got it done efficiently on the inside hitting on five of her six shots, including knocking down a three, while hauling in eight rebounds to lead AWC with 14 points.
Silva and Harria Mendoza each finished with 10 points.
What the Matadors didn't get from three or from Pagan and Mendoza, they got in transition after forcing a season-best 31 turnovers invluding 17 steals. Buse Utku led the way with seven swipes and the Mats salted away the game in the third quarter with another twenty point quarter.
While Chandler-Gilbert held the edge on the glass with 42 total rebounds and 22 of them on the offensive glass, the Matadors limited the Coyotes to just 12 second chance points. By comparison, the Mats scored nine points off of nine offensive rebounds.
The win returns the Lady Matadors to .500 on the season while also providing some much needed energy heading into the break after three straight road games and four games in five days.
The Matadors return to action after the Hollidays by hosting South Mountain on January 4th at 2:00pm. The men will follow at 4:00pm.
