GILBERT, Ariz. – Lockdown defense for three quarters powered the Arizona Western College women’s basketball team past Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Mats (21-8 overall, 16-5 ACCAC) cruised to a 75-34 win over CGCC (5-24 overall, 3-18 ACCAC). Eleven players scored for the Lady Mats as the team won its sixth straight, and AWC held Chandler-Gilbert to single digits on offense in three quarters.
Josselyn Morris came out firing and bombed in a three to put AWC up 3-0 in the first quarter, and the Lady Mats never trailed. She fired in nine points on three’s in the first quarter as AWC opened up a double digit lead. The sophomore had 13 points in the game.
Seven players scored for the Lady Mats in the quarter, and AWC led 24-8 at the end of it.
Chandler-Gilbert perked up in the second quarter. AWC scored the first five points of the quarter, but CGCC ripped off six straight. That was part of a 12-3 run that cut the AWC lead to 35-20 with three-and-a-half minutes left in the half.
Both sides traded buckets down the stretch, and AWC led 37-22 at the break. Chandler-Gilbert actually outscored AWC 14-13 in the second quarter.
The Lady Mats came out fired up in the third quarter and shut down Chandler-Gilbert. AWC only gave up five points, and turnovers led to easy buckets the other way. Gloria Mulumba scored the first four points after halftime on layups, and the rout was on. Mulumba led the team with 16 points in the game.
AWC stayed dialed in during the fourth quarter and held Chandler-Gilbert to seven points.
The win means that AWC still controls its own destiny in the hunt for the second seed in the Region I Playoffs. If the Lady Mats beat Pima on Tuesday, February 28 in the final game of the regular season, they will host the first round of the playoffs against Central Arizona one week later on Tuesday, March 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
