Matadors Knock Down Cochise for the third time
|Arizona Western College||42|
YUMA, Ariz---Relying on an ultra aggressive defense, the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (5-8 overall, 4-5 ACCAC) shut down the Cochise Apaches (0-8 overall, 0-7 ACCAC) 42-35 at The House Wednesday night.
It is the third victory of the year over the Apaches for the Matadors, clinching the season series and giving the Matadors an opportunity to climb above .500 in conference play.
LaKeysia Babels hit a couple of three's and led all scorers with 12 points in a game where the score often looked like a football game, and buckets came as often as touchdowns.
But the Matadors defensive intensity flustered Cochise into 23 total turnovers and while those only led to 14 points, it gave the Matadors 12 more shots in a game where every bucket seemed to count for double.
After racing out to an 8-0 lead, the Matadors saw Cochise find their rhythm by the second quarter and the Apaches shot 46% from the field in the period.
But that would be the only quarter that Cochise was above 25%. The Matadors were consistently at 25% for the game, but found big buckets from Bables, Hanah Sims and Faith Silva down the stretch to pull away over the final two periods.
Arizona Western will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Eastern Arizona to take on the #22 Gila Monsters for the final meeting between the teams on Friday night. They will then the Pima Aztecs Saturday in Tucson.
The Matadors will return home for a non-conference contest against Community Christian Tuesday, March 16.
