Lady Mats fall to USUE
Taylorsville, Utah – The Arizona Western Lady Matador’s trip to Utah ended in a 83-60 loss to the Utah State University Eastern Eagles Saturday morning.
AWC fell victim to a few rough stretches but started neck and neck for the second game with the Eagles
The Matadors found a balanced attack that kept them within two at the half. 8 different players scored at least one field goal as AWC trailed 37-35 at the break.
Arizona Western let the deficit slip to nine midway through the third period. But Mizha Gilberto nailed a three and Faith Silva added a bucket spurring a strong run to pull the game to a 52-51 score.
But a 13-0 run by USUE reset the lead for the Eagles.
Ultimately, the Matadors couldn’t repeat the shooting showcase from Thursday night as USUE shot over 40% from three, while the Matadors shot just 24% from long range.
Buse Utku led with 14 points for the Matadors while Faith Silva chipped in 13.
Arizona Western is 0-3 to start the year while USUE improves to 2-0.
The Lady Matadors will return to Arizona with the week to prepare for conference play, but the Mats open with the 6th ranked Central Arizona Vaqueras Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm in Coolidge, Arizona. Livestream information will be made available.
