YUMA, Ariz. – Gloria Mulumba and Destiny Gonzalez have been a pair of towers for the Arizona Western College women’s basketball team this season. The two sophomores lead the Lady Mats in scoring and rebounding, and they were both named to the All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Second Team and the All-Region I, Division I First Team.
Gonzalez is averaging a team-best 10.8 points per game while shooting 51.6% from the floor. Plus she is second on the team with 5.8 rebounds per game. Gonzalez has scored in double figures 18 times this season, and the Lady Mats are 15-3 when she has at least 10 points. Her season high was 20 points in a win over Northwest College on November 24.
Mulumba closed the season strong and bumped her scoring average up to 10.1 points per game (second on the team) after scoring at least 10 in four of the team’s final six games. She leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game and has had at least eight rebounds in five of her last six games. Plus, she set a career high with 20 rebounds (to go with 12 points) in a 69-62 win over Phoenix on February 10.
AWC finished the season 21-9 overall and 16-6 in the ACCAC. The Lady Mats will head to Central Arizona on Tuesday, March 6 for the first round of the Region I Playoffs. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The winner will play at Cochise College in the Region I Finals on Friday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
