North Las Vegas, NV---Multiple comebacks provided incredible theatrics as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors upended the 8th ranked Salt Lake Bruins in the first match of the second day at the CSN Invitational.
The Bruins looked dominant in the opening set with a 25-13 win but Arizona Western responded in kind evening the match with a 25-14 set two outcome.
Things began to even out in the third as the Mats and Bruins exchanged points but AWC held off SLCC with a 25-23 decision to take a two-sets to one lead.
But the Bruins forced a fifth set by the score of 25-19 in the fourth.
The resiliency was on display again, when down 8-4 in the fifth, the Mats rallied to take a 10-8 lead. But Salt Lake mounted a comeback of their own to force match point at 14-12.
Still, the Mats responded to tie the set at 14. The Bruins gained the next two set points but Garciglia Banuelos continued a stellar trip with three straight kills to give the Matadors their first match point at 17-16. After the Bruins tied it, Delaney St. Pierre’s tip gave the Mats a second match point at 18-17.
Garciglia Banuelos then delivered her fifth, and final, ace of the match to seal the victory for AWC.
Sophomore Jovana Papaz also had five aces as the Lady Matadors committed just two service errors over the five sets, pressuring the Bruins’ serve receive.
The Matadors tallied a season high 61 kills. Garciglia Banuelos’ 21 kills led the Mats for the third straight match, while Papaz added 19.
Arizona Western has now won six straight matches, improving to 8-6 overall on the season. They continue the tournament in North Las Vegas on Friday with a 3:00pm match against Parkland (FL).
