TUCSON, Ariz---After losing a late lead in the first set, the Arizona Western Lady Matadors responded to take the final three sets and beat the Pima Aztecs Wednesday night at the Aztec Gymnasium.
Pima rallied for the final three points in the first set after AWC held a 23-22 lead to steal the first set 25-23. The Mats were plagued by service errors in the first frame, committing five.
But Arizona Western turned it on behind Jovana Papaz' game high 21 kills to take sets two, three, and four 25-17. The Matadors committed just three service errors in the final three sets.
Lauolive Tonga, Nayeli Vilchez, Melissa Garciglia Banuelos, and Penina Matau each had eight kills to round out the attack.
Libero Cristina Hidalgo led the way with 13 digs while Delaney St. Pierre added ten.
The Mats are back to even, improving to 9-9 on the season and 2-0 in the ACCAC. AWC ends its eight match road trip at 5-3 and snaps a three match losing streak.
Pima falls to 4-7 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.
Arizona Western returns to Yuma Friday night to host Chandler-Gilbert at 7:00pm in The House.
