TUCSON, Ariz---When the Arizona Western Lady Matadors hit the floor in Tucson Wednesday night, they will be wrapping up their longest road trip of the 2019 season with their eighth consecutive away contest against the Pima Aztecs at 7:00pm
The daunting road trip started very well as the Mats ran their record above .500 during a six-match win streak that included the conference opener against Eastern Arizona and the first three matches of the CSN Invitational in Las Vegas. The sixth win came against the #8 Salt Lake Bruins on Friday, beginning a stretch of four ranked opponents, the last three sunk the Matadors back below .500.
As the Matadors fully fix their attention on their ACCAC foes, they will turn from being tested to being the test for their opponents.
The hosts from Pima are firmly into conference play with a 1-2 record in the ACCAC thus far. The Aztecs began the year 3-2 but have lost four of their last six including road matches at Mesa and Yavapai. Their attack ranks just ninth out of ten ACCAC schools and is led by sophomores Madi Nash and Jade Romine who have each tallied over 80 kills through Pima’s first ten matches.
The Aztec strength has been their blocking, ranking fifth in the conference in multiple blocking categories.
That will force the Matador attack to clean up their mistakes after posting an attack percentage under .200 the last three matches in Vegas. The offense was led by the ACCAC player of the week Melissa Garciglia Banuelos, who amassed 114 kills in just seven matches last week.
The match between Pima and Arizona Western will take place on the Pima West Campus Aztec Gymnasium Floor at 7:00pm Wednesday night.
