VB: Matadors Split Matches to Open 2021
SNYDER, Texas---A last second trip to Texas saw Arizona Western get to start the season a week earlier than anticipated and the Matadors rolled through Western Texas in straight sets before dropping their second contest of the day to Blinn Friday afternoon at the Tri-Match on the campus of Western Texas College.
It took only a point for Arizona Western to settle into play, ceding the opening point of the first set before Naomy Vergez service run built an early lead for the Matadors, forcing Western Texas to take a timeout at 9-4.
Arizona Western slowly built the lead behind Anny Montaño and Connie Silva forcing WTC to burn another timeout at 17-11, before finally wrapping up set one 25-17.
Set two saw Arizona Western flex their service game with Tylor Iosua delivering four aces in an impressive run and AWC wrapping up the set 25-10.
The final set saw the Lady Westerners toughness as Western Texas never went away. But the Matadors balance attack that saw seven different players register at least one kill, wrapped up the match in straight sets, taking the third frame 25-18.
Montaño and Silva each finished with a match-high 10 kills.
Sophomore Setter Mariana Donado was excellent guiding the Matador offense with 40 assists. While fellow Sophomore Cristina Reyes dugout 11 balls in what was a tidy effort defensively from AWC.
The Matadors had just an hour to gear up for their second match of the day, taking on Blinn College.
The first set was nip and tuck the entire way through with Blinn maintaining an edge before sealing the 25-23 win.
Arizona Western battled from down a set, and down six points, thanks to ten straight points on the service run from Jimenez Paz to even the match at a set a piece in set two.
But ultimately mistakes were too much for AWC to overcome as 11 service errors and 16 attack errors piled up as Blinn took sets three and four by 9 and 10 points respectively.
Jimenez Paz led the way for AWC in the match with 16 kills. Vergez added 10.
Donado had 36 assists and Reyes dug out 14 attempts for AWC.
The Matadors will be back in action at noon on Saturday taking on Vernon College. They will wrap up the trip by playing Blinn again at 2:00pm mountain time.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
