YUMA, Ariz---The first ever AWC Volleyball Classic went the way of the Arizona Western College Lady Matadors (4-6). The Lady Mats capped off the weekend with a straight set sweep of SAGU American Indian College (0-7).
The strong service from the Matadors picked up where it left off but it was the hot hand of Luisa Maria Mesa that carried the Mats to the finish. A freshman from Cali, Columbia, Mesa tallied three kills and a block in the opening set. Mesa also had a strong service run that opened up the lead to eight points, immediately followed by Melissa Garciglia Banuelos' run that pushed the Matadors to an 18-5 advantage before taking the set 25-8.
The Matadors benefited from some attack errors in set two, but a balanced attack by the AWC offense led to a comfortable 25-11 set two victory.
The third set started smoothly for AWC as Kofa High alum Isabel Ponce buyoed the Matadors with seven serves to open up a 16-5 advantage. But the Warriors made their run behind Jaylin Tochoney and Michaelynn Ben pulling within four points at 23-19. Freshman middle Penina Matau finishedoff the match with a kill, following a service error to ensure the Matadors sweep of the innagurual tournament.
The Matadors 12 service aces was the second most they have registered this season, only next to Friday night's 27. Seven different Matadors recorded multiple kills but none more than Mesa's game high of 9 kills.
