VB: Lady Matadors Block Eastern on Sophomore Night
|Eastern Arizona College||1|
|Arizona Western College||3|
YUMA, Ariz---The block party was in full effect, as the Arizona Western Matadors (9-9 overall, 5-3 ACCAC) used key blocks to stop the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (2-12 overall, 0-8 ACCAC) on Sophomore Night, Friday at The House.
The Matadors closed out the regular season by taking the final three sets of the four set battle, sweeping Eastern in the four matches throughout the season.
Arizona Western's multi-pronged attack was led by Anny Montano who became more of a force as the match went on, finishing with a team-high 12 kills.
Connie Silva and Daniela Jimenez Paz each had nine kills.
But it was the block, not the Matador offense, that appeared at key points. Silva assisted on four and freshman Kaylani Reis was apart of 3 as Arizona Western slowed major runs by Eastern at the net.
AWC fell into an early hole in the first set 19-11 before pulling within two at 23-21, ultimately falling into a one set deficit at 25-22.
But the kept their rhythm for the second set reeling off 10 straight points to take a 15-5 lead, ultimately taking set two 25-8.
The Gila Monsters battled throughout behind Ashley Martin and Taya Baldwin, who delivered some key blocks of their own.
But the Matadors gained an edge in set three at 25-20 before closing it out in set four on consecutive aces from Mariana Donado, finishing the four-set victory at 25-18.
Arizona Western will prepare for the Region Final on Wednesday, taking on the ACCAC Champion Yavapai RoughRiders for the fifth time this season and third time in Prescott.
The winner of that match will host the District Match on Saturday, April 3rd.
Yavapai will stream the event through GoRoughRiders.com.
