PRESCOTT, Ariz--Sophomores Jovana Papaz and Live Tonga combined for 18 kills without an error as the 20th ranked Lady Matadors picked up their first win of 2019 in striaght sets over #9 Laramie County at the Daltton Overstreet Invitational at Yavapai College Friday morning.
The Matadors improve to 1-4 on the young season while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-6.
Papaz led the way with 11 kills on 22 attempts and added three service aces while Tonga put away seven points, a day after her birthday, in her season debut.
Arizona Western jumped out in front of Laramie County with a 25-18 win in set one before wrapping up the match with 25-22 wins in each of the last two sets.
It was the best offensive attack of the season for the Matadors as they hit .326 as a team while committing just 8 attack errors.
Melissa Garciglia Banuelos, Delaney St. Pierre, and Luisa Maria Mesa added five or more kills apiece to round out a balanced attack.
The Lady Matadors will return to action against #11 Snow College at 1:00pm on Friday in Prescott.
