YUMA, Ariz. – Two wins in two matches and an undefeated conference record pushed the Arizona Western College volleyball team to 20th in the latest NJCAA poll. The Lady Mats had been receiving votes for the past three weeks, but they finally broke through this week. Miami Dade, Iowa Western, Salt Lake, Southern Idaho and Mineral Area make up the top five.
AWC beat a pair of ranked Division II teams last week. On Wednesday, AWC swept then fourth-ranked Glendale before topping ninth-ranked South Mountain in four sets on Friday. Yenny Montoya Murillo piled up 24 kills in the two matches, and Lisbeth Rosario Martinez added 12 kills and seven blocks.
Arizona Western (14-4 overall, 6-0 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) has won three straight matches. Montoya Murillo leads the team with 242 kills and 3.67 kills per set. As a team, the Lady Mats average 1.6 service aces per set, and six players have at least 10 aces.
The Lady Mats are the only ranked team from the ACCAC. They will play three matches this week. Wednesday night, the team heads to Yavapai before coming home for a pair of matches. On Friday, the team hosts Phoenix at 7:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the Lady Mats host Pima at 1:00 p.m.
