Take two: Paniagua named ACCAC Division I Volleyball Player of the Week

Sophomore middle blocker earns honor for 2nd time in 6 weeks

Yuma, Arizona October 8, 2007 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Volleyball player Patty Paniagua has been named the ACCAC Division I Volleyball Player of the Week Award for her performances this past week. It is the second time that Paniagua has received this honor this season (she won the inaugural award of the 2007 season on September 4th) and she joins teammate Ana Bauer as the only two-time winners of the award in the conference this year. It also continues the clean sweep of this award by the Lady Matadors, since they've owned at least a piece of this award all six weeks that it has been given out since the season began in late August. Paniagua has now won the award a total of three times dating back to last season.

The Lady Matadors had several impressive individual performances this past week, but Paniagua's performances in the Lady Matadors' two wins stood out the most. The sophomore-who calls Stockton, California home-not only showed her usual power and strength at and above the net, but was frightening efficient when the Lady Mats had to have it. AWC hosted ACCAC leader Phoenix College last Wednesday, and were looking to avenge their only conference loss that PC tagged on them in late August. They did it emphatically in straight games, with Paniagua knocking through 15 kills, recording a frighteningly high .636 hitting percentage and coming up with 5 blocks. Paniagua followed that performance up on Friday night with 12 kills and 8 blocks on the road against Chandler-Gilbert. For the week, her hitting percentage was a fantastic .426 while she averaged 3.8 kills and 1.86 blocks per game. On the season, Paniagua remains the ACCAC leader in blocks (1.53 per game) and hitting percentage (.367). She's also tied for 5th in kills with a 3.73 kills-per-game average.

Paniagua and the Lady Mats, who are now just 1/2 game out of first place in the ACCAC (but are even with league-leading Phoenix in the loss column), have a favorable schedule to close out the regular season, hosting four of their last six conference matches. That home swing begins this Wednesday night, October 10th, as the Lady Cougars of South Mountain Community College come to 'The House' for a 7PM first serve. Admission to the match is $5 for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12. Ticket information can be obtained by calling (928) 344-7536 or at the AWC Athletics website: www.azwestern.edu/athletics.
