YUMA, Ariz. – Despite not having a home match through the first two weeks of the season, the Arizona Western volleyball team has put together a solid start. After opening 6-3 overall, the Lady Mats are 16th in the first NJCAA regular season poll, released today. The Lady Mats were ranked 13th in the NJCAA preseason poll.

AWC reeled off four straight wins at the Imperial Valley Invitational at Imperial Valley College this past weekend. The Lady Mats opened the season at Scottsdale and traveled up to Southern Nevada for four matches over two days.

Arizona Western is the only Division I team from the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in the NJCAA top 20. Glendale is fourth in the Division II poll, and Mesa was ranked 10th. Miami Dade came in first in the Division I poll, followed by Iowa Western, Panola, Salt Lake and Western Nebraska.

The Lady Mats head out again this weekend for four more matches. This time the team is headed to the College of Southern Idaho. The team plays sixth-ranked Southern Idaho and Casper College on Friday before playing Northwest College and 10th-ranked Snow on Saturday.

AWC finally returns home on Wednesday, September 20 to host Pima. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm, and tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members and veterans. Children 12 and under and AWC students and staff (with current school ID) get in for FREE!

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
