YUMA, Ariz---While the sayings about being close may be true, the Arizona Western Matadors (2-1 overall) traded points with #17 Indian Hills (9-1 overall) for most of the evening before falling in three sets Saturday in The House at the AWC Volleyball Invitational.
The Matadors traded points throughout the first set with neither team managing more than three consecutive points. Natalia Ślażyńska delivered a couple of key kills to keep the match at 19 and delivered another one to stop IHCC's lone three point streak in the set, tying the match at 22. But Indian Hills went ahead after a couple of kills by Jarolin de los Santos, forcing set points both times.
AWC would capitalize on a pair of errors to get their lone set point at 27-26 but IHCC took two more cracks at it before Jenna Valee finished the long set at 29-27.
Set two was deadlocked until 15, when Pamela Durazo appeared to get the Matadors ahead for the first time since the first point of the set. But what seemed to be an ace was overruled after the officials converged. That was the crack that IHCC needed as Anja Vranic delivered nine straight points from the service line with a host of her teammates contributing. Naomy Vergez avoided the first set point with a kill but Precious Daley sealed the set for the Warriors with her 7th kill of the frame.
Set three was deadlocked again until 16, but Brooke Amann led the charge for Indian Hills as they scored nine of the final ten points to close out the match.
AWC was led by Anny Montaño's 10 kills while Naomy Vergez, Connie Silva and Pamela Durazo had efficient nights. Otherwise, the Matadors hit .132 as a team against one of the top offensive teams in the country.
Indian Hills finished their Yuma trip five for five in their matches and won all 15 sets they played.
AWC will turn their attention north, heading up to Salt Lake for four matches Friday and Saturday.
Live stream will be only available through SLCC for a fee.
